Margaret Iris is an Italy-based Fine Art photography project whose imagery draws on the visual language of painting. Through carefully constructed sets and a particular attention to styling and light, Margaret Iris creates intimate and personal worlds in which time seems suspended.
The work draws on the study of Flemish painting and the Italian tradition of the seventeenth century, translating their use of light, stillness and composition into a contemporary photographic language. Dreamlike, contemplative and quietly mysterious, the photographs are conceived as tableaux, in which every element — from figures and gestures to fabrics, flowers and objects — contributes to the construction of the scene.
Margaret Iris works from a studio set within a historic Italian palazzo, where the images are conceived and created in collaboration with models and a small circle of creative professionals. The photographic process continues into print: selected works are produced as limited-edition Fine Art prints, while a dedicated space within the studio allows the collection to be viewed in its physical form.
Margaret Iris is the pseudonym of Italian-British artist and researcher Susanna Fiona Murray, whose contemporary art practice includes research projects, installations and collaborations with museums and cultural institutions.
